About Us
Since 1988, C.A.R.E. has joined forces with both public and private partners to create and maintain affordable housing and deliver crucial support services to those who need them most. We are committed to fostering community through the preservation and creation of high-quality, permanent affordable housing in Manhattan. C.A.R.E. was formed by a coalition of Clinton-based organizations including social services organizations, educational Organizations, and other community-development organizations. C.A.R.E.’s board of directors continues to be drawn from among them. As a result, C.A.R.E. is not simply a special-interest group, but a genuine representative of the diverse interests and needs of the Manhattan community.
The C.A.R.E.’s board has been led by women since 1988 and it’s properties are managed by a minority owned business, P&L Management. C.A.R.E. believes in diversity and inclusion in both their leadership and operational practices.
C.A.R.E is much more than a mere landlord, as shown by the fact that services to tenants of the Properties do not cease when they sign leases. C.A.R.E.’s tenants include many low-income individuals who require various social and supportive services to maintain normal daily living. C.A.R.E. plays a pivotal role in connecting these tenants with essential resources and services, ensuring they receive the support they need.
When tenants face challenges with rent payments, CARE and P&L Management step in to work collaboratively with them, addressing the underlying issues rather than resorting to eviction. C.A.R.E.’s approach is centered on understanding and resolving the difficulties that contribute to financial strain, reflecting a genuine commitment to helping tenants succeed. Further, C.A.R.E. diligently monitors the well-being of tenants who are receiving social and supportive services, ensuring they maintain their housing in a safe and sanitary condition and meet all their financial responsibilities. C.A.R.E’s commitment to working closely with tenants to resolve financial challenges and provide support reflects its commitment to their mission. C.A.R.E. also addresses disruptive behavior with compassion and a focus on resolving the root causes, rather than resorting to immediate eviction. Through these comprehensive and compassionate approaches, C.A.R.E. exemplifies its role as a vital community partner, dedicated to fostering a supportive and thriving environment for all its tenants.
Our History– In the early 1980s, to address community concerns about the impact of developing Worldwide Plaza on the Clinton neighborhood, C.A.R.E. was founded. C.A.R.E., a newly created not-for-profit organization at the time, was set up to manage the preservation and creation of affordable housing. As part of the agreement, the developer committed to providing 132 units of low- and moderate-income housing by acquiring and rehabilitating several residential buildings in the area. These buildings were transferred to C.A.R.E., ensuring the organization could effectively represent and address the community’s housing needs.
In 2004, C.A.R.E joined forces with Boston Financial to undertake the development of Clinton Parkview Apartments, a project that resulted in the creation of 96 affordable housing units through low-income tax credits. This partnership exemplified C.A.R.E’s ongoing commitment to expanding affordable housing options and supporting the community’s needs.
Our Future– C.A.R.E. is dedicated to its ongoing mission of supporting individuals in need and advancing housing development. Looking ahead, we plan to continue our vital work of providing affordable housing and essential services to underserved communities. We aim to expand our impact by developing new housing projects that address the growing demand for affordable living options in Manhattan. Through these efforts, we remain committed to fostering stable, inclusive communities and improving the quality of life for those it serves.
